“Air travellers around the world use WhatsApp in their daily lives and so it is an ideal channel for them to communicate with the airline and receive the latest information about their travel journey.”

Etihad Airways will now let passengers text their complaints and requests via WhatsApp, in a nice bit of customer service that's a welcome alternative to waiting in line or calling some toll-free number. The airline, which ranks as one of the top international carriers in our Readers' Choice Awards, will start by offering the service at its hub at Abu Dhabi International—though it's limited to passengers in premium cabins for now, the airline said in a statement.
Etihad will hand out the number for the WhatsApp hotline at their premium-class check-in desks, but the plan is for the service to grow into something beyond just a way for high-spending customers to send complaints, the airline says. In the future, they'll send "important messages like flight reminders" via the texting service, and give passengers the ability to "chat with the airline’s agents about their flights in a fast, personal, and efficient way.

But what if you're not in business class or Etihad's better-than-first-class Residence? Twitter's a good option: The platform has long been a helpful forum for airline complaints, and carriers have entire customer support teams monitoring the service for passenger gripes and questions. (Here's a good place to mention the @EtihadHelp account.)

During the initial trial phase, the Etihad Airways WhatsApp number will be exhibited in Premium check-in at Abu Dhabi Airport.
